Killer of Coast Guardsman Caught 16 Years Later

Sixteen years after the murder of 35 year old Coast Guardsman Marinos Zapatis, at Sayada, in Thesprotia prefecture, western Greece, a person accused of the crime has been arrested at the Kakavia border station with Albania.
The alleged perpetrator is a 54 year old man from Albania.
Marinos Zapatis had been killed while on operations at sea with other members of the Coast Guard's Special Operations Bureau based on Kerkyra.
The Coast Guard vessel had spotted a suspicious boat, and when they hailed for them to stop, the occupants of the boat opened fire with assault rifles.
A firefight ensued in the vicinity of Cape Stylos, near Sayada, in which Marinos Zapatis received fire and was killed.
In honor of Marinos Zapatis the Hellenic Coast Guard gave his name to one of its vessels.
