Wildfire on Chios
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A wildfire that broke out early Monday on the island of Chios is currently in full progress. The fire is burning farmland, pine and mastic trees in southern Chios near the villages of Vessa and Lithio.
According to Chios mayor Manolis Vournos the blaze reached the village of Elata and some residents left the village to protect themselves from the thick smoke. Firefighters, volunteers are currently battling the blaze while firefighting aircrafts took off from Athens to join and assist in the operation, however, the strong northern winds blowing in the area make the firefighters works extremely difficult.
