The Attica region will fund the remodelling of Panepistimou Street, as well as the extension of the tram's railway line from Syntagma to Egyptou Square with 40 million euros.
An agreement was signed to that effect between the deputy minister of Environment, Energy & Climate Change, Stavros Kalafatis, and the head of the Attica region Yiannis Sgouros, in the presence of Andonis Papadimitiou, president of the Onassis Foundation, which has understaken the financing of the studies to date.
As Kalafatis stressed, "The Ministry of Environment, Energy, & Climate Change and the Attica Region commit today to financing with 78.5 million euros the remodelling of Panepistimiou Street on a specific plan and the extension of the tram from Syntagma Square to Alexandras Avenue."
The relevant project is expected to be completed within two years. Okra in collaboration with Mixst urbanism and Wageningen University, was recently announced as the winning team of the prestigious competition Re Think Athens towards a new city centre.
Changing the heart of Athens into a true contemporary metropolitan city centre requires transformation of the city triangle into a lively part of the city. The project aims to strongly contribute to the change of Athens and improve the environment of the city plus activating the area economically. The team is supported by the Greek Architects of Studio 75 and Werner Sobek Green Technologies. More images and architects’ description after the break.
