Greek mps "clean out" parliament kiosk after raising tobacco taxes
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The news that cigarette prices would be raised by 5 eurocents a pack sent many smokers to kiosks to stock up before prices go up.
With the economy being what its is every cent counts for wage earners who have seen incomes slide by 40% in recent years and just can't kick the habit. That much is understandable and excusabe.
What is perhaps not as understandable, bordering on the undecorous, was what happened at the parliament's kiosk that sells tobacco products to mps.
Within 24 hours of voting in the price rise, the country's legislators and their parliamentary minions had charged the kiosk and depleted all stocks of cigarettes, even by the carton.
