Copernicus shows disaster in eastern Attica
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The assessment of the Copernicus European satellite service for the disaster caused by the fire in Neos Voutza, Rafina, and Mati is shocking.
The fire burned about 12,760 stremma (1 stremma = 1000 square meters). Half of the burnt area, 6,934 stremma, was a residential area, while Copernicus estimated that there were 3,664 people residing in the fire stricken area.
In the wider area of interest the population amounts to 11,154 people, meaning that if the fire had spread further the toll could be much heavier.
The fire also burned 2,018 stremma of forest and almost 1,000 stremma of low vegetation.
