UN Sec Gen praises Tsipras for refugee management
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres congratulated Greece for its efforts to address the refugee crisis in his meeting with Alexis Tsipras in New York, according to government sources, while giving the Greek prime minister the credit for the "historic agreement" with FYROM.
According to the same sources, the prime minister referred to the Cyprus issue on the basis of Greece's firm position for a just and viable solution in the context of UN resolutions. He underlined the importance of Greek-Turkish dialogue, noting that this was crucial, among other things, for migration, as well as the need for Turkey to respect international law in the region.
The cudos come at a time when the international press has blasted Greece over the plight of migrants and refugees on the Aegean island hot spots, and allegations over mismanagement of EU funds for their welfare.
