Prince Beos' Monaco in Thessaly
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Achilleas Beos, one of the Greek football world's most colorful figures is a candidate for mayor of Volos, Magnesia prefecture, has promised his would-be constituents he will turn their city into... Monaco.
According to local press, Mr Beos in announcing his candidacy for the Volos municipality promised local residents that he will turn Volos into Monaco, both in terms of infrastructure as well as in terms of attitude.
Mr Beos, known for somewhat nefarious dealings on the Greek football scene, says he represents all that is “new” and “untarnished,” while also characterizing as “hogwash” any talk of political culture.
At the same time the mayoral candidate foretold that he would strike the “knife of the corrupt political system” with his fist. “I know I will bleed,” he said, adding, “but, the knife will break.”
Volos, which Mr Beos wants to turn into his personal principality, is a seaside town with a moderate port and a rich hinterland that provides a rich variety of cultivated, or wild produce. Nestled at the foot of forested hills that carry on to Mt Olympus it's famed for its shops serving traditional tsipouro spirits and local meze.
