Imposing USS Gerald R. Ford docks off greater Athens area
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The US Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), arrived off coastal Athens, in Faliro Bay, on Thursday night for scheduled port of call.
Before docking off the greater Athens-Piraeus coast, Carrier Strike Group 12, with the CVN 78 as the flagship, conducted exercises with several Hellenic Navy warships “to enhance partner interoperability and demonstrate commitment to security in the Mediterranean,” a US Navy statement said.
The Gerald R. Ford left its homeport of Norfolk on May 2. The carrier is named after the 38th US president, Gerald Ford.
Previously, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) paid a port call to the Athens area last February.
