Mitsotakis for F-35: Greece is doubly shielded
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described today as an important day for national defense and Greek diplomacy after the American Foreign Ministry gave the green light for the sale of 40 F-35 fighter jets to Greece, for 8.6 billion euros.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis who received the relevant letter from US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says that "the strategic depth of Greek-American relations is highlighted and sealed".
He noted that these are frigates, C-130 transports, armored vehicles, but also many other items of defense equipment.
However, regarding the acquisition of the F-16s by Turkey, government sources said that Greece is dealing with the issue and armoring and strengthening its armed forces. It cannot dictate US policy on defense programs towards third countries. Nor can defense supplies to Greece, a reliable partner and ally, be linked to the armament programs of other countries.
The same sources state that the fixed Greek position, especially in the context of participation in NATO, is that no equipment attributed to a country can be used against an ally country. After all, this serves regional stability and the interests of the Alliance in the region.
