Huge operation to eradicate sheep and goat plague in Western Greece

The operation to contain and eradicate an outbreak of sheep and goat plague in the regional unit of Western Greece was in full progress on Thursday.
Already, in Etoakarnania and Ilia, 38 teams were operating on Thursday and 44 teams will operate on Friday, with a coordinator, following an order issued by Rural Development and Food Minister Kostas Tsiaras and the general secretary, Giorgos Stratakos.
According to the ministry, this is the largest veterinary operation that has ever taken place in Greece.
Meanwhile, there are no cases of ruminant plague in Heraklion, Crete as all samples tested in recent days have been negative, stressed the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis who emphasized that inspections are ongoing.
Arnaoutakis noted that after August 11, when the slaughter ban measures will end slaughterhouses in Rethymno will resume operations. He also announced that strict checks have been implemented on animal feed arriving on the island, including disinfection of feed in transport vehicles and cleaning at entry points in Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion
