Diplomatic sources on Turkey-Syria EEZ: The transitional situation does not legitimize any agreement - It is a European border
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Diplomatic sources are commenting on the possibility of signing an agreement between Turkey and Syria on an Exclusive Economic Zone, saying that there are European borders in the area, sending a strong message to Ankara.
“These are European borders. We have already raised this with the EU with the statement we made with Austria and Cyprus. This is a transitional situation that does not legitimize any such agreement. We are monitoring it. We are in constant communication with Cyprus and all neighboring countries, as well as the EU,” said sources at the Foreign Ministry regarding what was announced by the Turkish Minister of Transport.
Earlier, the Turkish media outlet TGRT Haber reported that Turkish Minister of Transport Abdulkadir Uraloğlu claimed that an agreement between Ankara and Damascus to define an EEZ is imminent.
The Turkish media outlet notes that Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure made these statements after yesterday’s crucial Cabinet meeting.
The TGRT journalist in Ankara spoke about Uraloğlu, who provided information on Turkey’s efforts to reconstruct and develop Syria after the overthrow of the Assad regime and on the agreements that need to be made.
“We will sign an agreement with the Syrian government on maritime jurisdiction. We are working on an emergency action plan that includes the restoration and upgrading of air, rail and road connections in Syria. We will put the airports into operation,” said the Turkish Minister of Transport, according to the TGRT spokesperson.
