A joint operation by the Attica Crime Investigation and Prosecution Directorate and police in Nea Zoi, Aspropyrgos, has been underway since the early hours of today.
So far, 17 people have been arrested for various offenses.
The operation is a continuation of the incident that occurred yesterday (6/8) in the area, when a violent clash broke out between young Roma and Greeks from the former Soviet Union, with an exchange of gunfire.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the "Nea Zoi" camp, when four Roma, riding in a private vehicle, chased a car in which the young expatriates were. According to the information so far, an intense altercation and conflict between the two groups followed.
At least 40 shots were fired
According to ERT, the Greek expatriates fled the scene and took refuge in a private business near the camp, which is said to be owned by two of them. Despite the evacuation, the tension continued. The Roma followed them and fired towards the building. According to witnesses, at least 40 shots were heard, while the perpetrators were provocatively calling on the members of the opposing group to come out.
Stray bullets in neighboring buildings
The shooting caused material damage to both the Greek expatriates' car and the business building. Of particular concern is the fact that many stray bullets hit neighboring houses, penetrating walls and causing fear among the residents of the area
