The country is divided in two by the agricultural blockades - Great mobilization of farmers
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Farmers have been escalating their protests since yesterday, taking their tractors down to the national roads and closing tmajor national roadways.
At the Nikaia junction, the National Road is closed with farmers having lined up hundreds of tractors in the agricultural blockade.
This is one of the largest protests in recent years and a big bet for the farmers who aimed to close the road to get their message about their problems across to the government.
Meanwhile, a farmers' meeting is scheduled for today at 5:30, where they will decide on new protests.
The Traffic Police continues to divert traffic via alternative routes, in order to avoid major problems in the flow of vehicles.
In Malgara, according to state broadcaster ERT, the farmers are preparing for the first roadblocks, with a force of 150 tractors already gathered in the village and preparing to go to the toll booths at 11 o'clock. However, it remains unknown whether they will close the road.
Another roadblock is in Koufalia, where they will also decide whether to close the road, while the farmers of eastern Thessaloniki will decide on their mobilizations tomorrow.
Yesterday's incidents at the roadblocks
Meanwhile, today at 10:30 the three farmers who were arrested yesterday are expected to pass through the highway. One of the three is hospitalized with a broken rib and he himself is denouncing police violence. The three farmers are facing charges of violence, resistance and damage to other people's property.
The first day of the protests yesterday was accompanied by incidents in Nikaia and Platykampos, when farmers attempted to approach the National Road and clashes with riot police forces followed. Chemicals and flash bangs were used, while there were injuries and three arrests.
According to the Police update, two arrests were made in Platykampos – one for violence against officers, damage and resistance, the second for damage – while the third arrest was made at the Nikaia junction for bodily harm and resistance.
