Communist doctor unionists attack minister Georgiadis - Police spokesperson responds

Featured Communist doctor unionists attack minister Georgiadis - Police spokesperson responds

On Friday morning,Hellenic Police -  ELAS spokesperson Constantia Dimoglidou spoke about unprecedented images in a hospital, regarding what happened at the General State Hospital of Nikaia on Thursday during the visit of the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis.

“What they wanted was for the police to leave so they could attack the minister. They were from a specific faction, as we were informed, they were doctors, workers. Some were surprised by the presence of the police because they obviously wanted to see images of the minister’s head being opened? They attacked the police officers, half of the colleagues are injured from the waist down,” Ms. Dimoglidou told MEGA.

“I’m sorry if these people are doctors, we have never seen these images in a hospital before. They wanted to attack the minister and not allow him to enter the hospital, the police are there to protect every person,” Ms. Dimoglidou added.

As she noted, "these people, as soon as they saw the minister, attacked him, causing him bodily harm, but he did not want to be prosecuted," while responding to those who, as she said, wondered why the police entered the hospital, the ELAS spokesperson said, "this happened because some people wanted to enter the area where the inauguration was taking place. The helmets belong to the OPKE group's equipment because stones and bottles were thrown there too."

MD MatinaPagoni: Trade unionism is not about spitting while wearing a doctor's uniform

"These images do not represent me. Spitting, attacking, wearing a doctor's apron, and creating these situations do not represent me," said Matina Pagoni for her part. “As a trade unionist, I know that trade unionism is about demanding seriously and responsibly and advocating for the good of patients and colleagues,” she added.

“Unfortunately, people did not like these images and they are not acceptable. You cannot see a doctor being attacked in this way and spitting,” she said in this context.

As those who participated in the incidents clarified, “they are from our own federation from a specific faction. I am not worthy of discussing specific individuals who participated. It is not the first time they have done this, these individuals are well-known.”

“When we wear the apron and the clothes of the hospital where we work, we cannot offer the public such images. We must demand but not with these images, I am sorry. The outpatient clinics at the Nikaia hospital were a mess, they were made up and you create such a situation when they give you something better? Do you have other things in mind. When they offer us something better, should we not accept it? " concluded Matina Pagoni

Georgiadis: I am an elected minister, not a tyrant

Speaking to Action24 on Thursday evening, Adonis Georgiadis said that upon his arrival at the hospital, a group of protesters attempted to block his entrance, forming a barrier, which, as he stated, led to tension and incidents. "While trying to enter the hospital, they created a barrier and the incidents started," he said.

Responding to those who criticized his presence, he stressed: "I am an elected minister, not a tyrant. I represent the Greek people, not ANTARSYA and the KKE. I received 64,004 crosses in B1 of the Northern Sector of Athens, much more than ANTARSYA received in all of Greece.”

When asked if, after what happened, he would consider visiting the hospital again, he replied that he would return, as there are other projects he needs to inaugurate.

Complaints about aggressive behavior and danger to his life

The Minister of Health spoke of pushes and aggressive behavior, even mentioning a danger to his life. He claimed that he was insulted and, as he said, spat on by a doctor. “If what they say has hurt me, can I beat them up?”, he said, responding to those who linked the climate of tension with his previous statements about healthcare workers.

He stressed that "no one has the right to prevent the Minister of Health from entering a public hospital," describing the incidents as "absolutely condemnable," while also citing video footage that, as he claimed, captures what happened.
