A Frontex vessel capsized and sank off the coast of Kastellorizo, with four passengers slightly injured.
There were a total of five people on board the vessel, 4 Estonians - including the Estonian ambassador - and a Coast Guard officer. The four injured who were rescued were transported by Super Puma to Rhodes and are expected to be taken to the island's hospital.
The mayor of Kastellorizo, Nikolaos Asvestis, describes to Greek media hat the Frontex vessel capsized for a reason that is currently unknown. The Coast Guard immediately rushed to the scene and, as Mr. Asvestis reports, after the injured were rescued, an explosion followed and the vessel sank.
“One is serious, has head injuries, and two or three people are lighter, with bruises, minor injuries. It was a Frontex vessel and it was their last day today. They had a visitor from Estonia to show him exactly what they do on the island, and as they were returning to the port for unspecified reasons the vessel capsized. A Coast Guard vessel was on the scene within three minutes to collect the shipwrecked people and as soon as it collected them, after a few minutes there was an explosion and the vessel sank,” says the mayor.
It is noted that according to information from hospital sources, the injuries sustained by a man to the head are minor fractures.
