- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A mysterious unmanned sea vessel was spotted by fishermen from Vasiliki, Lefkada, on Thursday near Cape Doukato (Cape Kyra).
The black speedboat was found inside a cave, with its engine running, reports thespotlight.gr, where the video is from.
It carries special sensors, antennas and high-tech communication equipment on the upper part.
It is unknown whether the vessel drifted to Lefkada from international waters while participating in an exercise or for something else.
The fishermen tied it up and towed it to the port of Vasiliki, while the Coast Guard recovered it shortly afterwards.
It is a USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle), i.e. an unmanned surface vessel used mainly for military purposes, such as surveillance, information gathering or even special operations, but also for advanced scientific research.
According to initial information, the local authorities have already recorded the incident and the vessel is under surveillance. An official statement on the matter will be issued by the competent ministry, which is now investigating the origin and purpose of the presence of the vessel in Greek territorial waters.
