A lot of anxiety but even more excitement prevailed at the KEYP in Lamia on Thursday morning (04/06) as 72 women made history by becoming the first female volunteers to join the Greek Army.

The young women did not hide their impatience for the new step they chose to take in their lives.

The commander of the Hoplites Battalion, Ms. Klonari Konstantina, referred to this historic day by saying: “Today is a historic day for the Greek Army as we have the joy and responsibility to welcome and train the first female volunteer recruits in the history of the Greek Republic. Their enlistment completes the equal representation of women in the Armed Forces, contributes to increasing the potential of the Hellenic Army and therefore to strengthening its operational readiness and further strengthens the ties of the Hellenic Army with Greek society.”

As for the new recruits, they will remain at the Lamia Recruit Training Center for a total of 10 weeks where they will follow the first phase of their training, which consists of initial training and combat training.

“The Army is something I have been chasing since I was little. I also have the support of my husband who is a soldier. I am not stressed. I have a question,” said new recruit Fotini Theopisti.

After providing their details and being registered by the authorities, the volunteer recruits entered the unit where they were checked in, given their uniforms, boots and the necessary equipment and then taken to their dormitories to officially begin their training. The oath-taking of the female volunteers will take place on Friday, June 26.

It should be noted that the incentives for women who decided to enlist are sufficient.

Specifically, these include recognition of service time as prior service, points in ASEP competitions, priority recruitment of graduates as civilian personnel (nurses, daycare workers, administrative personnel, etc.), and access to benefits for Armed Forces personnel (military hospitals, clubs, etc.).
