Hamas terrorist arrested on Crete - Planning attack?

Featured Hamas terrorist arrested on Crete - Planning attack?

The arrest of a 37-year-old man of Palestinian origin was carried out this afternoon, in Agios Nikolaos in Crete, by officers of the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Directorate for Combating Special Violent Crimes, as part of an investigation into terrorist activity and possible connections with persons who have recently concerned the Cypriot authorities.

According to police information, the 37-year-old, originally from the Gaza Strip, is accused of being a member of the terrorist organization Hamas, as well as training and traveling to support terrorist acts. According to the same information, he was planning an attack on Israeli targets, possibly with explosives on a cruise ship.

The arrested person is legally in our country, lives alone in Patisia and works in a hotel in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. The authorities arrived at his arrest, using information from Cyprus, where arrests were recently made for cases related to the terrorist activity of Hamas in Jerusalem (including bombings). The operation was organized after the use of information and coordination between the EYP and the Anti-Terrorist Service.

According to the same information, the 37-year-old allegedly admitted that he had contacts with other persons and participated in actions aimed at creating the appropriate conditions and mechanisms for the implementation of a terrorist attack on Israeli targets in a European country.

As it turns out, it was still in the preparation stage and did not have the necessary means to proceed to the next phase. The authorities estimate that the target could be a cruise ship, however the plan had not progressed beyond the stage of gathering materials.

In fact, he allegedly had already ordered some of the materials that would be used, but without having time to use them.

As part of the investigation, searches were carried out at houses in Crete and Athens, where the authorities located and confiscated mobile phones, a laptop computer, data storage media, bank cards, as well as laboratory equipment.

The findings are expected to be examined in the special laboratories of the Police.

The 37-year-old, who was alone at the time of the arrest, is expected to be brought before the competent prosecutor. The investigations are in full progress, in order to establish the scope of his activities and all his collaborations and connections inside and outside Greece.
