Inmate slays guard at Malandrino
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A prison guard at Malandrino correctional facilities was attacked by an inmate who slit his carotid artery with a shank, a homemade knife.
The 46 year old guard died while being transported to hospital, leaving behind two children.
The Albanian inmate who stabbed the hapless guard, Kareli Ilia, is serving a life sentence for murder. According to eyewitness reports the perpetrator at the time of the assault cried out, “you won't let me see my mother, I’ll take one of your lives.”
The killing has led to a weird apprehensive state throughout the Greek prison system. However, prisons are in an uproar with many inmates refusing chow, or claiming to be on hunger strikes.
A veteran prison guard unionist told press that the attack was “waiting to happen,” as the explosive climate in Greek prisons has been building up over the last three years, with those jailed for serious offenses intermingled with other inmates, and becoming able to terrorize guards and inmates alike.
At this point there is a dearth of unfilled positions to the order of 60%.
