Eurostat to report on Greek surplus tomorrow
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The long anticipated review of the government's forecast of a primary surplus is expected tomorrow, April 23 by Eurostat, the European Commission's Statistics Service.
The review is important for the ongoing discussions with the Troika on further reduction of Greece's debt. Eurostat is expected to confirm that Greece has achieved a primary surplus, possibly a little lower than the government's forecast.
Eurozone leaders have said that this review could pave the way for a discussion about a possible lightening of Greece’s debt, a development that the government aims at, in order to improve its image to Greek citizens, ahead of European Parliament elections in May.
Greece secured billions of euros in pending rescue loans last month, returned to international bond markets for the first time in four years last week and received a fresh expression of political support from German Chancellor Angela Merkel who visited the country a few days before Easter. Now that the Easter holidays are officially over, the government will focus back to the issue of the country’s unsustainable debt and preparations for elections next month.
