Record number of EU election candidates
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Thirty nine parties, seven coalitions, and an independent candidate are running in Greece for the upcoming European parliament elections.
This is a record number, especially if one takes into account the state of the economy. During the last elections for European parliament there were only 23 parties vying for the vote.
The deadline ended yesterday (Thursday), while Sunday is the deadline for tendering the candidate lists to the supreme court.
It seems the 3,000 euro registration fee imposed on candidates did not dampen the ardors of prospective candidates, as many of them expect funding if they get above a certain number of votes.
For the time being, however, election activities have so far been extremely low key with few candidate tours, very few flyers, while door to door campaigning seems to have gone out the back... door.
