Migrant Boats Sink Near Samos
Near Samos, thirty passengers are missing and at least two have drowned, as a result of two sinking boats located near the Turkish coastline.
The vessels were packed with illegal immigrants trying to enter Greece, via the eastern Aegean Sea. The Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed that thirty-six travelers were brought to safety. There is currently a search team that includes one cruise ship, coast guard crafts, fishing boats and two helicopters. The rescuers are scanning the waters for more survivors.
Greece is the main entry point in Europe, where eastern migrants arrive in search of better EU opportunities. Many illegal crossings end up in fatalities, due to the risks involved in crossing waterway passages.
