Greek merchant fleet again tops global lists

The Greek owned merchant marine fleet is again first on the global shipping market. Greek shipowners are first in tanker ownership, second in bulk carriers, second in LNG transport ships, and second in container ships.

According to “Naftemporiki” financial newspaper, quoting Lloyd's register notes that the fleet under Greek ownership, at the end of April came to 4,894 ships, 168,922,455 gt and 291,735,318 dwt. Japan is in second place with 8,357 ships, 242,640,509 dwt and 159,401,728 gt, while China is in third place with 6,427 ships, 190,601,765 dwt and 116,675,336 gt. Greek owned shipping is currently the only merchant marine power that can be matched up against China and Japan.

The first five are rounded out with, Germany with 4,197 ships, 126,55,373 dwt and 95,052,148 gt and South Korea with 2,651 ships, 83,534,652 dwt and 52,870,979 gt.

As concerns ship type:

  • Tankers: Greece is in first place with 1,217 ships, 118,621,414 dwt and 64,347,957 gt. Japan is second with 938 ships, 40,175,492 dwt and 21,660,620 gt. China is third with 531 ships, 32,954,543 dwt and18,094,791 gt.

  • Bulk carriers: japan is first with 1,791 ships, 156,251,060 dwt and 84,987,256 gt. Greece is in second place with 1,878 ships, 145,484,209 dwt and 78,843,115 gt, while China is in third place with 1,936 ships, 124,726,924 dwt and 69,870,973 gt.
