Greece to simplify repatriation process for US-trained doctors
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
In a significant step toward reversing the country's long-standing brain drain, the Greek government has announced new legislation aiming at easing the return of Greek doctors trained in the United States. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced recently, stating that a forthcoming bill will allow automatic recognition of specialty and subspecialty titles for US-trained Greek medical professionals provided that the titles will “be valid and will correspond to positions available” in the country.
The measure seeks to eliminate the slow and complex bureaucratic hurdles that currently discourage many from returning. By enabling direct recognition of qualifications through the Panhellenic Medical Association, the initiative hopes to reintegrate talented physicians into the National Healthcare System reflecting a broader strategy to bring back expatriate professionals.
“We decided with the Minister and the Deputy Minister to cut the Gordian knot and bring a provision that automatically recognizes specialty and specialization to those who are certified in the United States by the corresponding bodies”, Prime Minister Mitsotakis said in a teleconference with doctors on both sides of the Atlantic.
