The first Famagusta Film Festival in New York opens its doors today, Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m. The festival will take place at the Hellenic Cultural Center of Astoria at 25-02 Newtown Ave, Astoria NY 11102, and will last five days.

This is an innovation and at the same time an initiative of Alexandros Famagustianos in his dual capacity. The first capacity as the artistic director of the said Center and the second as the founder of the think tank “Famagusta Council” and “FAMA Media Group”.

The festival, as stated in the relevant press release, will take place at the THESPIS Theater, at 25-02 Newtown Av, Astoria NY 11102, and will last 5 days. During its first year, the festival has received almost 1000 applications, from which only 22 works have been selected for presentation.

The entries include six different film blocks, namely: –

Block A: (9 films) – Animated & Experimental Short Films Wednesday 13 May 2026, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Block B: (7 films) – Narrative Short Films Thursday 14 May 2026, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Block C: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Friday 15 May 2026, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Block D: (3 films) – A Cinematic Reflection on Memory Saturday, May 16, 2026, 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Block E: 3 Friends Screening Saturday, May 16, 2026, 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. –

Block F: Exodus (1960) Screening Sunday, May 17, 2026, 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Among the notable films of the festival are:

– 3 Friends Directed by: Daniel Gurry, Running time: 91 minutes. The film follows an American professor studying in Greece and his friends, searching for the identity of the new generation in the era of economic recovery.

– Varosha – Europe’s Enclosed Town Director: Tonis Toumazis, Running time: 39:51, Language: English/Greek. The documentary examines the history of the Varosha region, a once prosperous area that is now under occupation.

– My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Director: Nia Vardalos, Running time: 93 minutes. A new adventure for the Portokalos family as they travel through Greece. – Exodus (1960)

The film, which includes scenes from Famagusta, explores the history of Jewish refugees after World War II.

During the festival, there will also be a discussion with Professor Stuart Weinstock about the film Exodus.
