Cyprus Offers 1,215 Individuals Asylum

Cyprus accepted 1,215 individuals under asylum status for 2014, as confirmed by the EU statistical agency Eurostat.

The Eurostat findings reveal that the nation offered 1,150 people subsidiary protection, while an additional 65 were granted refugee status. Syrians make up most of the asylum population on the island, and hold 92.5% of the cases.

In full, the European Union accepted 184,665 cases, and 103,670 were granted refugee rights.  The EU nations that hold the most refugees for 2014 were Germany, Sweden and France, respectively.
