George Prokopiou: His largest tanker, "Atokos", crossed the Strait of Hormuz

Featured George Prokopiou: His largest tanker, "Atokos", crossed the Strait of Hormuz

Greek shipowner George Prokopiou, whose ships have repeatedly transited the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran-Iraq war, has sent its largest oil supertanker since the conflict began. The Atokos, a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) with a capacity of about 2 million barrels, recorded a position signal in the Indian Ocean on Friday, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. This suggests that it had transited the Strait of Hormuz in the previous days with its tracking transmitter turned off.

The ship is managed by Dynacom Tankers Management Ltd., according to shipping databases, and its passage means that the company has now transported about 6.5 million barrels through the Strait, making it by far the largest non-Iranian carrier through the waterway. Dynacom did not immediately respond to a request for comment in the Bloomberg report.

Shipping through the Strait—which before the war carried about 20 percent of the world’s oil and a similar amount of liquefied natural gas—remains largely blocked. That has forced producers in the wider region to curtail output and boosted the prices of crude, as well as products such as jet fuel, diesel and gasoline.

The same week, the United States began its own blockade of Iranian ships, adding further pressure to the one Tehran has already imposed since the start of hostilities.
