Barosso Lauds Putin on Syria
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso has expressed his satisfaction that Russian president Vladimir Putin is using his country's influence in order to find a solution for Syria.
"Syria has always been the great ally of Russia, ever since the Soviet Union era. Under these circumstances, Russia exerts tremendous influence. I can not but be satisfied that Mr. Putin is using this influence in order to find a solution, something that was not happening before," said Barosso to French media.
"The fact that the threat exists, especially on the part of the Americans, but also of the French, was a key factor so that Syria accepted the destruction of its chemical weapons," Mr. Barosso opined, referring to the threat of a strike by US and French forces against Assad's assets.
