Atlantic SEE LNG Trade: Doubles LNG quantities from the US - Extension of long-term agreement with Venture Global
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The extension of the existing long-term agreement between Atlantic SEE LNG, the AKTOR and DEPA Trading consortium, and the American Venture Global offers a boost to the further development of the Vertical Natural Gas Corridor - by increasing the quantities of American LNG that will supply Central and Southeastern Europe via Greece.
The deal, which doubles the quantities of LNG that the American company will supply to Atlantic SEE, follows Venture's investment to reserve capacity at the Alexandroupolis LNG import terminal (FSRU).
It is a very important agreement that "fits" with the plan, on the one hand, to strengthen the capacity of the Vertical Corridor on the "main" route Greece-Bulgaria-Romania-Moldova-Ukraine, on the other hand, to activate the branch to Slovakia and Hungary and to expand to the Western Balkans (North Macedonia, Albania, Serbia) and comes in the wake of the issuance of the letters of guarantee by Atlantic SEE LNG. This marks the full activation of the 20-year agreement with Venture Global for LNG supply from 2030, which is now being strengthened even further.
The new deals that Atlantic SEE LNG is preparing
With the additional quantities of American LNG that Atlantic SEE LNG is "locking in", the way is also opened for new agreements with offtakers from the Central and Southeastern European region that are under the influence of the Vertical Corridor. As stated by the CEO of AKTOR Group and Atlantic SEE LNG, Alexandros Exarchou, in an interview with Bloomberg, a few hours before the announcement, negotiations with Romania are expected to be completed by the end of the summer. In this case, the total quantity that will be committed will amount to 3.7 billion cubic meters per year. He added that, if binding agreements are concluded with Bulgaria and Ukraine within the year, Atlantic SEE LNG will seek to conclude new LNG supply contracts. The company is also examining the possibility of concluding LNG supply agreements with countries such as Serbia, Croatia and North Macedonia, with the entire plan gaining increased momentum.
Long-term 20-year agreement for the supply of 1 million tons of LNG per year from 2030
More specifically, as follows from the announcements of all parties involved, Venture Global and Atlantic SEE LNG are proceeding with an extension of the existing Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPμA) for the supply of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the American company for a period of twenty years, starting in 2030. In this context, Atlantic-SEE is doubling its existing contract with Venture Global, from at least 0.5 million tons per year (MTPA) to 1 million tons per year (MTPA). This development significantly strengthens the company's long-term supply strategy and contributes to the creation of a reliable and diversified supply framework for the markets of Southeastern and Central Europe.
The initial agreement between the two companies, which was signed in the framework of the PTEC in November 2025 in Athens and was hailed as the first long-term LNG supply contract in Southeastern Europe, provided for the possibility of increasing the committed quantities in the future, which is now being activated.
Venture Global even links the expanded agreement to the investment it has made in gasification capacity at the Alexandroupolis FSRU, which currently corresponds to approximately 25% of the terminal’s total capacity. It also emphasizes that this infrastructure and the Vertical Corridor for the transport of LNG from South to North will be crucial for strengthening the energy security of Central and Eastern Europe, providing a new route for the transport of affordable and reliable American natural gas to the region.
