Greek Sunday Store Openings Produce Dismal Results
The Greek National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE) President Vasilis Korkidis stated that Sunday store openings haven't resulted in concrete revenue increases, even in tourist destinations, as reported by To Vima.
This past Saturday was met with a demonstration by employee unions, who protested in central Athens over Sunday's operational hours. ESEE data determined that less than two out of ten shops opened on Sunday, while various malls were closed as well.
The summer sale period did not attract a substantial amount of additional shoppers; city stores in Piraeus, Larissa, Iraklio and Patra confirmed a reduction in sales from 10% to 20%. Top tourist regions including Rhodes, Corfu and Crete experienced relatively minor sales benefits with the additional operational day.
