Esteemed actor Angelos Antonopoulos dies at 94

One of the most beloved but also modest presences of theater, cinema and television, the actor Angelos Antonopoulos, passed away at the age of 94, having left a long and successful artistic path.
According to information from protothema.gr, a few relatives and friends said their last "goodbye" to the actor, at 11 am on Wednesday at the Karystos Cemetery, after the funeral service had been preceded by the Holy Church of Agios Athanasios Aetos. The news of his death was not made public before his burial, which took place, according to his wishes, in the region of Evia that he loved very much and spent his summers there.
The actor was born in Olympia, near Ancient Olympia, originally from Gortynia, and grew up in Tambouria and Ancient Olympia. He studied at the Drama School of the Art Theater "Karolos Koun". For many years he was also an acting teacher. He began acting in performances by great Greek and foreign writers, under the guidance of Karolos Koun. After Koun, his theatrical career continued with collaboration with Dimitris Myrat at the Mousouri Theater.
From 1962 and for a decade he participated in large troupes. He collaborated with all the important leading men and women of Greek theater, in all theatrical genres, in works such as Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar", Brecht's "The Rise of Arturo Uy", Ustinov's "The Loves of the Four Colonels", Chekhov's "The Seagull" and Jacques De Waal's "Tovarich", among others.
He made his film debut with the films "The Excursion" and "Parenthesis" by Takis Kanellopoulos. Subsequently, he collaborated with important directors, such as Vasilis Georgiadis, Dinos Dimopoulos, Yannis Dalianidis, Errikos Andreou, Giorgos Tzavellas and Filopoimin Finos, participating in more than 30 films in total.
He made his television debut in 1971, at the suggestion of director Kostas Koutsomytis, participating in the series "Unknown War" by Nikos Foskolos. This was followed by series such as "The Pantheons", "The Light of Dawn", "Madame Sousou", "Rainbow", "Family - Family Casino", "Symphony of Silence" and "Wedding Rehearsal". His last television appearance was in the series "The Children of Niobe" in 2004.
In parallel, he was a teacher at drama schools for many years, while collaborating with important theater personalities, such as Alexis Minotis, Katina Paxinou, Vera Zavitsianou, Manos Katrakis, Errikos Andreou and Vasilis Georgiadis. In 2007, he played the role of Karl Marx in the theater.
Angelos Antonopoulos also wrote the novel "The Passengers of the Moon" (Aiora Publications, 2006) and the poetry collection "Unguarded Crossing" (Aiora Publications, 2011).
