WWF Greece Pens Coastal Open Letter to Parliament
The World Wild Life Fund's Greek sector has reached out to Parliament members with an open letter, pointing out the hazards of a newly introduced bill that lifts regulations on coastal constructions.
WWF Greece coined the Finance Ministry bill as "criminal" and requested that lawmakers not back it. The contentious bill makes all current sea area restrictions obsolete, by lifting the maximum size of beach mechanisms, including bars, sun chairs, umbrellas and more. It also lifts free public access to shorelines and allows unlicensed commercial construction activity to build freely, as long as companies pay a "fine".
The Finance Ministry believes that the new mandate will outline the Hellenic seaboard and simplify beach activities. Environmental organizations across Greece are strongly against the bill.
