Radioactive Device Stolen
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A red alert has been issued by the Hellenic Atomic Energy Committee (EEAE) after the theft of a high risk radioactive device at Lianokladi.
The device, more than likely a nuclear densometer, has two radiation sources, and the warning issued with the alert stresses the serious dangers for people exposed to the device, as well as radioactive contamination of the environment.
The thieves used for gauging ground composition was stolen from the warehouses of the company constructing the E65 highway.
EEAE warns of danger if the device is dismantled, or if it ends up at some recycling center.
The committee has also issued a plea to anyone who has, or has seen the device, worth 10,000 – 12,000 euros not to open it, or sell it for recycling, but to immediately contact Greek police.
