MEP Kefalogiannis visits fellow candidate Fredi Beleri in Albanian prison

Greek MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis paid his fourth visit to Himare's jailed mayor-elect, Fredi Beleri, in the Fier Prison in Albania where he is being held, according to an announcement on Easter Monday. After a meeting with Beleri, who is also a candidate in the European Parliament elections with Greece's New Democracy party, Kefalogiannis made the following statement:
"Fredi Beleris is continuing his proud struggle for the Greek ethnic minority, for Himare's residents. He has been a prisoner for a year now. An unsound and unsupported charge, an unfair decision keeps him illegally in jail.
"He fights with truth and a pure patriotic love for his country as his weapons and it is certain that in the end he will be victorious.
"Albania is a candidate country for accession to the European Union. Albania's accession course, however, depends on respect for the fundamental rights of the Greek ethnic minority. On resolving the property issue in North Epirus. On respect for good neighbour relations, the immediate release of Fredi Beleri, on his swearing-in as Himare mayor.
"The European Parliament plenary in a resolution demands a fair trial for Fredi Beleri and the protection of the property of the Greek ethnic minority in North Epirus.
"All this has been made categorically clear to the Albanian side."
