Greek olive oil exports to Japan rise
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Greek olive oil exports to Japan maintained the upward trend observed in recent years, in the first seven months of 2014, as appears from a letter of the Office for Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Greek Embassy in Tokio. It must be noted that all oil consumed in Japan is imported at zero import duty.
According to the information contained in this document, the amount of Greek exports of virgin olive oil, during the period January - July 2014 amounted to 2.28 million euros as against 2.06 million euros for the corresponding period of 2013.
As a result, Greece remained 4th among countries - suppliers of olive oil to the Japanese market. In the first three positions are Italy, Spain and Turkey.
In recent years, the Japanese oil market is growing at a rapid rate, which reached + 60.2% in 2013 and + 14.2% in 2012, while Greek exports are growing but still slower, + 43.4% in 2013 and + 4.5% in 2012.
The sad fact is that despite the third largest olive oil producer, and arguably the top in quality, Greece remained in fourth place in Japan.
