Taxi drivers up in arms against Uber
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The head of the Union of Attica Taxi Drivers was most irate when he railed against the internet ridesharing service that has recently arrived in Athens and which advertises taxi-type services at up to 20% lower prices than conventional taxi fare.
In a vituperative Facebook post on the union’s page he called any taxi driver that cooperates with Uber, ‘Judases’ who should be hung in Syntagma square.
“Taxi drivers who work with uber are the enemy of the sector” he writes, “We are obligated to protect the thousands of families which live off of this profession. Whichever taxi drivers betray the taxi like modern day Judades “for thirty pieces of silver” should be hanged, but not from a fig tree, in Syntagma!”
In another post he underlines, “The war is only beginning. And it is a war for survival. The traitors of the sector have minimal time to remedy their actions. It would be good for every taxi owner to know about his drivers’ partnerships and to deter them from uber. The driver may be temporary in the profession and not care about tomorrow. But the owner will have a taxi tomorrow, he will have his assets. So let us not allow any chancer to play with and undermine our assets and our profession.”
In the comments on the Facebook posts many other drivers reiterate Mr Lyberopoulos’s positions, talking of ‘traitors’, ‘bastards’ and ‘cowardly little people’. However others urged the union chief to drop the threats and guide his colleagues more properly.
