Varoufakis: ‘No guarantee we will be in government next January’
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Journalists were waiting for Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis outside the ministry on Wednesday morning but it was a cleaning lady who managed to elicit a newsworthy statement.
When Varoufakis arrived at the ministry, a journalist asked him whether it is possible for Greece to reach an agreement with our EU partners in two weeks, taking into account the tense atmosphere and the recent statement by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble who said that in reality there has been no progress.
Varoufakis replied that an agreement will be reached “with mutual concessions”.
And then a cleaning lady came on the scene. She approached Varoufakis asking him to give her a guarantee that cleaning ladies will not be fired in the next year.
“How can I guarantee that we will be in government next January?”, was Varoufakis reply, adding that “If we will be the government then, I am giving you my absolute guarantee that you won’t be fired. As long as we are the government none of the cleaning ladies will be fired”.
