Rhodes airport reopens after large pothole on runway filled
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Flights from and to Rhodes airport are conducted normally after the restoration of the damage provoked by the torrential rain on Diagoras airport landing airstrip.
The airport had closed late Tuesday afternoon for security reasons when a large pothole opened in the middle of the runway due to the continuous rain. The closure was deemed necessary because the eight-meter-wide pothole was preventing the taxiing of aircraft.
Authorities said a crack that existed at the same spot had been fixed, but the torrential rain in the last few hours re-opened it. The landing of 25 flights with destination Rhodes was cancelled and some of them landed on Kos, some others on Crete and the others returned to the Athens International Airport.
