Univ. of Athens Rectors Resign
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Despite optimism that students would start lessons at universities by Tuesday, the war between university authorities and the government again flared up, on Monday morning, resulting in the resignation of the Athens university board of rectors.
After the two 48 hour strikes called for by administrative staff of the Athens University and the Athens Polytechnic within the week, the Athens University board of rectors convened with the staff asking for their "support," for the planned strikes.
The board members tendered their resignations to head rector Theodosis Pelegrinis and mandated him to seek a meeting with the prime minister to seek some solution to the impasse.
In its announcement the board of rectors mentions "legal and moral" holes in the decisions of the education ministry to proceed with a registration of administrative staff and the subsequent sacking of many, while noting that teaching staff will not enter classes under police custody.
