Frontex: More than 500K refugees reached Greek islands
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
More than 540,000 war refugees and irregular migrants landed on various Greek islands during the first 10 months of 2015, the European border agency Frontex reported on Tuesday.
This number was 13 times the equivalent in 2014, with Syrian nationals comprising the majority of those arriving, though the number of Afghans had also risen significantly in recent weeks.
Undeterred by worsening weather conditions, more than 150,000 people attempted the crossing from Turkey to Greece in October, compared to just 8,500 in October 2014.
