The port of Piraeus and the former Elliniko airport will have been decongested from refugees and migrants by July 20, Shipping Minister Thodoris Dritsas said in an event on the refugee issue on Monday.
Dritsas underlined that it is a procedure depending on the progress of the works in the organised hospitality centres adding that the refugee and migration problem could not have been handled efficiently without the synergies of the local communities.
The minister praised the rescue operation efforts saying that the Coast Guard has rescued at least 150,000 refugees and migrants. He also stressed the importance of everyone's contribution to helping those people be integrated in the Greek society.
On his part Alternate Civil Protection Minister Nikos Toskas, who was the keynote speaker at the event, said: "We cannot say that we have solved everything, but we managed to combine humanism with the safety of the local communities to avoid possible reactions that could be exploited by extreme right parties."
