Greek authorities have finally located a speedboat carrying irregular migrants, which had sent a distress signal via the European emergency number early on Wednesday morning.
After a search lasting several hours by the Igoumenitsa and Ionian Island coast guard forces, the missing craft was found sailing adrift about 30 nautical miles west of Paxos. There were 29 people on board, including the operator.
According to early reports, all on board are safe and well and will be transported to Igoumenitsa, in the custody of the coast guard. Based on their statements, the irregular migrants set off from the coast of Preveza at dawn headed for Italy but the speedboat engines broke down en route so they were unable to reach their destination.
