Police quell uprising by African migrants in Moria hotspot on Lesvos
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
An uprising by African migrants within the Moria Migration Reception and Identification Centre on the island of Lesvos was rapidly quelled on Tuesday, after Greek authorities deployed a strong police force and used teargas to disperse rioters.
Police officers and two platoons of MAT riot police brought in from Athens succeeded in quashing the violence by about 18:00 on Tuesday but not before some 4,000 square metres of olive groves surrounding the hotspot were burnt, as well as tents, infrastructure and an unknown quantity of waste bins within the compound.
There was also damage to five cars owned by police and other employees parked outside the Moria camp and a total of seven police officers were injured, one of which was taken to hospital as a precaution.
According to reports so far, police have arrested more than 30 African nationals for instigating the violence and they will be taken to the predeparture centre. One migrant was also taken to hospital as a precaution, due to respiratory problems caused by breathing in teargas.
