Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin not to be extradited to Turkey

Another negative response was handed by the Council of Appeals to a request by Turkey for the extradition of Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin Mehmet Dogan.
Adopting the prosecutor's proposal, the judges considered that the Turkish request should not be satisfied, as the defendant has already been recognized as a political refugee by a European country, particularly France.
"It emerged from the document and travel documents that he was in possession of the status of the 1951 Geneva Convention, since France has already recognized him as a refugee. The Treaty takes precedence over both our Constitution and Greece's obligations for extradition. Therefore, extradition to Turkey has already been ruled out for the reason that his life iwould be in danger and he may be subjected to torture and inhuman treatment. Moreover, it was proved in the hearing that the persecution he suffered in his country is likely to have been done for his political and racial beliefs. If extradited, there is a risk of his physical integrity and his life. "
Dogan was arrested alongside his eight foreign counterparts in Kallithea and Neos Kosmos suburbs and led to the prosecutor on charges of membership in a terrorist organization, which they deny.
Next Tuesday the Appeals Board will discuss the extradition request for the second of the 9 persons being detained on the same charges.
