Greek government refuses key CERN cancer unit, outrages scientific community
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The "no" that Greece said to host a Cancer Tumor Radiation Unit, developed in CERN laboratories, on its territory came as a big surprise!
According to Kathimerini, quoting Professor of Particle Physics of the National Technical University of Athens and a member of the CERN Scientific Committee, Evangelos Gazis, Greece declined to claim the installation, maintaining that the role of observer was enough, leaving Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and Montenegro to claim the project!
The cost of the investment is 100 million euros and the amortization, according to the entrepreneurship plan developed by NCSR Demokritos, the NTUA and the Medical School of the University of Thessaly, does not exceed 5 to 6 years.
Indeed, this know-how is granted to the country in which the investment is made, exclusively for its use and application, for all the Balkan countries, North Africa, and possibly also Turkey!
According to NTUA professor Evangelos Gazi, in October 2017, CERN was set up a cooperative movement of Balkan states with the name "South Eastern Europe", in order to strengthen the Balkan countries in high technology issues. Greece was represented in this collaboration movement by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology that said it did not want to become a member and remains an observer! Matrona Kyprianidou is the General Secretary of GSRT, under the supervision the Deputy Minister of Education Kostas Fotakis.
This unit is an innovative radiotherapy system for cancerous tumors utilizing a proton beam, which has excellent results in primary cancers, since it "strikes" the tumor "at its heart", destroying it completely while leaving healthy cells, around the tumor, intact.
