Google's Digital News Innovation Fund has handed out 1.8 mln euros in Greece

Google has provided funding for eight media innovation programmes in Greece, via its Digital News Innovation Fund, which has so far supported 461 programmes involving innovation in the media in 29 EU countries, with a total funding of 94 million euros.
The Fund is part of the Google News Initiative and has provided 1.8 million euros for the Greek programmes, implemented by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, "Demokritos", the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH), Piraeus University, the Athens Technology Center, enikos.gr and Liquid Media.
The Digital News Innovation Fund is going to spend a total of 150 million euros to promote innovative projects in the European news 'ecosystem'. Of of this amount, 94 million euros have already been absorbed in almost three years, followed by another round of funding.
Altogether, more than 4,800 applications for programme funding have been filed at a European level. Among other things, these are programmes that promote quality journalism and combat misinformation (for example, through the cross-checking of events with the help of modern technologies), help smaller news producers to have a stronger voice in the digital world, help publishers convert their content into revenue, automate workflow or content, enhance personalized content and user engagement, etc.
