A first step towards developing Thessaloniki’s coastal front
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Thessaloniki regional authorities are one step closer to drawing up a spatial planning scheme for the development of the northern port city’s coastal front.
The Central Macedonia Regional Council approved the Regional Authority’s request which will be forwarded to the environment ministry for further approval, expected within the year.
The idea is “to organize Thessaloniki’s coastal front… and create a continuous 40km stretch from Kalochori to Aggelochori, taking advantage of the coastal front for the benefit of the city, local communities and residents, while creating a new identity for Thessaloniki”, said Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas, of the joint initiative launched last November involving seafront municipalities, the Thessaloniki Urban Planning Department and the region.
Describing the spatial plan as a “leading development project for Central Macedonia”, Tzitzikostas went on to stress that the idea was put into action following proposals made by local communities, with the aim “to meet the needs of citizens and to have the consent of local authorities”.
Among others, the proposal for the development of Thessaloniki’s coastal front includes the creation of green spaces and park areas, walking paths linking key landmarks and museums, bike lanes from the White Tower to the port, marina and berthing infrastructure, and recreational facilities.
