Fire ravages Attica from the West, as east coast is reduced to cinders.
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A fire is raging at the borders of Corinthia - West Attica, while the smoke is visible as far away as islands in the Cyclades.
The fire started at the top of the Gerania mountains in west Attica, and quickly spread down the mountain side to the seaside resort of Kineta.
Sundown forced firefighting aircraft to their bases, while ground firefighting forces continue efforts to, at least, contain the raging fires.
At least one fire dept officer told newgreektv there is concern if the strong winds that have been blowing, in changing directions, since morning, start blowing towards the east placing nearby oil refineries at risk.
A little after sundown the fire department shut down the national road linking the Peloponnese to the rest of Greece, as it passes through the blaze.
The smoke from Kineta blew over the Athens basin, covering the Acropolis, and alarming citizens. The smell of smoke at Faliron at this time is more than obvious.

This at the same time as flames engulf the Attica area from the East, as well.
