- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Fleet is in constant readiness to respond to its mission, to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"Every night there is a war in the Aegean. When a Turk ventures forth, he will find one of our units next to him," said the Chief of the Hellenic Navy of General Staff, Vice-Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis, on the occasion of the Turkish provocations, which have shown a steep rise, beyond in the air and on the sea, but also regarding the "innocent passage" of Turkish ships through the Aegean from 2009 to October 2018.
It is characteristic that in 2009 the innocent passage of Turkish warships numbered only 90, in 2017 there rose to 1,998 and up to October of this year the number was 1,249. It is recalled that in 2017 there were 3,317 violations of the national airspace by Turkish aircraft and this year by October they had reached 3.147.
Regarding the Navy's operational activity on a daily basis, 46% refers to national activities, 25% to operational training, 24% to international obligations, and 5% to third party actions.
