A new museum, housing the private art collection of Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris, will open to the public on October 1, at 13 Eratosthenous Street, in the Athens district of Pangrati.
In the 11-storey building of 7,250 sq. metres, works of art of the modern and contemporary European avant-garde will include paintings and sculptures by Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Bonnard, and Braque among others, as well as works of prominent Greek artists such as Parthenis, Bouzianis, Vassiliou, Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Tsarouchis, Moralis, Tetsis and others.
The museum will be hosting periodical exhibitions, of both Greek and foreign artists, and features also a store and a coffee shop, an art library, a children's workshop, as well as a modern 190-seat amphitheatre.
"Next to Kallimarmaro (Panathenaic Stadium), within the cultural path surrounding all the major museums of Athens, the museum will make its debut with a series of events that will mark its new beginning. It will contain innovative actions, modern museum applications, and a great educational program," the president of Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris Foundation, Florette Karadontis, said.
The project also includes the redevelopment and future preservation of the adjacent Agios Spyridonas Square, which the Foundation assumed gratis for the municipality of Athens.
